The physics of light, density differentials\u00a0and fluid flow, along with\u00a0an adapted Schlieren photography method, captures the visual end results of\u00a0the mussel&#8230;.. doing it&#8217;s thing&#8230;.. working hard for it&#8217;s living.<\/p>\n<p>See it&#8217;s work here in our YouTube\u00a0vid&#8217;.<br \/>\n<strong>Mussels at Work &#8211; filter feeding &#8211; made visible with science<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/x8azd4qPMnU?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>A quickie on mussels:<\/strong><br \/>\nMussels attach themselves most securely\u00a0to a\u00a0solid surrounding, a rock, a marine boat pontoon, etc, with self made byssal threads.<\/p>\n<p>They live out there lives in this one place, within the protection of their shells, of which they have two halved sections, hinged together along\u00a0one edge, allowing the ability\u00a0to open and close the two halves\u00a0on the other\u00a0side.<\/p>\n<p>If on the shore and the tide is out, they close the shells. If under water and are threatened by predators, they also close the shells&#8230;. It&#8217;s a protection thing.<\/p>\n<p>When under water and under no threats, they open their shells and are then free to suck the surrounding water into themselves, filter any food particles held in the water, then expel the then filtered water out and away&#8230; they are filter-feeders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A quickie on the sciencey bit:<\/strong><br \/>\nWhen an object is\u00a0observed (go stare\u00a0at something), you make it out (see it &#8211; as you are the observer) from the light that comes from it, heading towards\u00a0where your eyes are.<\/p>\n<p>The Schlieren photography method gets a precise grip on the light heading to the observer (a\u00a0camera). The precision is gained from a concave mirror, made with extremely precise\u00a0engineering standards and end optical quality.<\/p>\n<p>In the video, the Schlieren images seen are all within a circular background&#8230;.
